Ian began the meeting with a reminder that the prints for the club exhibition are collected at the meeting in May and that anyone unsure about printing or mounting their photo(s) should contact one of the committee who will gladly give a helping hand.
Then Ian introduced Ray Brammall who many of the audience knew from his appraisal of the club exhibition in 2025 or from his photography at national and international level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ray began his photography whilst very young, his father taught him how to print at the age of 12.
His love of the printed image has lasted until the present day, hence the focus for the evening “It’s Got To Be Print”<\/strong>
Whilst Ray is keen to try a huge variety of photography in his work he has a love of the landscape, particularly Scotland with visits to the islands of Harris & Lewis being a favourite. In a talk all about print this website is just going to give a flavour of what we saw (or what you missed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that in mind Ray talked a little about the choice of papers he favours and spoke warmly of Oyster paper as a very good general paper, He showed several landscapes to emphasise the range of tone and detail it was able to capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a talk with so wide a range and so many prints it is impossible to do more than give a flavour here but Ray entertained with a sequence of portraits in black and white, then some images taken using infra red, followed by a series taken on the sea shore that emphasised the importance of light. All the colours of Harris tweed were represented in beautiful images of the island.
After the break the photographs were of various sports, starting with tennis and Ray explaining that the technique was to focus on the player receiving the serve and to start shooting as soon as you heard the serve. He also pointed out the frustration of the serve hitting the net ie a fault, as well as the stipulation by the Lawn Tennis Association that spectators could not use lenses longer than 300mm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series of sporting images ranged from swimming and tennis to cricket and athletics with lots of emphasis on catching the action or the expression or both!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final part of the evening was a display of the panel that gained Ray his Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty photographs were in the panel that Ray presented and he not only gained his fellowship but a great deal of praise from the assessors about his artistic interpretation of the theme as well as its cohesion. Below is just a flavour of the prints. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its was a great achievement and a wonderfully entertaining evening that gave us all chance to appreciate the quality and variety of work that Ray has captured over his career. The applause was well deserved and Ray stayed to talk to many of the members, asking a range of questions about his prints and his photography, thankyou Ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
