September 11th C&HVPS meeting

Karen Frankel

Sadly, Karen was unable to make her presentation, as a close relative is ill. Karen will now make her ‘Coast to Coast’ presentation in the early part of 2015.

Images presented by members during the meeting. Plus rules for architecturaly themed images for the 2015 competition

In the absence of Karen Frankels presentation, Kate & Keith Brown organised an evening where members were able to display their printed images or project their digital images – all with an architectural theme. The evening was both enjoyable and instructive. If you’d like to see some of the images we viewed, click onto this link: http://www.hopevalleyphotosociety.co.uk/?page_id=355 As guidance to members, architectural themed images submitted for the 2015 competition should depict the style in which a building is designed. It can be exterior or interior and can portray the whole building or detail of the building. Statues and sculptures are also acceptable. However care must be taken when including figures or surrounding landscape within the picture if you want to demonstrate scale. If you include figures, or the surrounding landscape, ensure that the architectural subject is still the dominant factor in the photograph and any additions are subsidiary. You can submit a maximum of three images for the 2015 competition, which covers the themes of General and Architectural. The three images can be any combination of images which meet the two themes. They can be a combination of colour or monochrome, as the best monochrome image submitted (for the General and Architectural themes) will be awarded the Denis Thorpe Trophy. For example, you may wish to submit one colour landscape image, one colour architectural image and on monochrome architectural image OR three General or Architectural themed images – but you are restricted to submitting no more than three images in total.

Keith & Kate Brown’s AV Night

Keith & Kate’s stunning AV evening adds cash to our coffers

Audio Visuals (AV’s) are about adding another dimension to photography by combining high quality photographic images with music, narration and other sound effects. Keith Brown FRPS FIPF EFIAP MPAGB APAGB and Kate Brown LRPS DPAGBhave been making AV’s award winning AV’s for many years.

By winning a silver medal for their Grease, Gaskets & Gears compilation at the Royal Society of Photography’s 2013 Audio Visual competition, the duo have demonstrated that they are both past and present masters of this demanding multi-skilled media. On 22nd August members & guests were delighted to pack the pews to view some of K&K’s AV’s, at St Edmund’s Church, Castleton.

Below, Keith & Kate (pictured each side of our club president, Peter Harrison) kindly offered to present a number of their audio visuals to members and guests – many of who live in Castleton and know Roger Thorpe, the star of Grease, Gaskets & Gears. The AV evening covered topics including Keith’s
tribute to the Beatles; an amusing take on the Beep Beep song, the little Nash Rambler; 84 year old Connie Brown’s first visit to Switzerland, and of
course the award winning Grease Gaskets & Gears.

The famous multi award winning photojournalist Denis Thorpe presents
Nick Chalkley with the Denis Thorpe Trophy for Nick’s 2014 winning monochrome
image entitled ‘Walkies’. Denis, who is famous for his B&W images, had selected
‘Walkies’ as the winner.

During the intermission guests perused the 70+ images members of club had submitted for our annual competition. these images had been mounted on foam-backed boards by Honorary Life Member Ray Fowler. The £128 proceeds from entrance fees for the AV evening will be added to our kitty, enabling us to purchase high quality display mounts; making the task of mounting and exhibiting our images both easier and slicker

Valley photographers snap up a silver medal

The Peak District with its continually changing weather, is blessed with superb countryside and iconic English villages; offering almost unrivalled scope for photographers. But few photographers can lay claim to wining a Royal Photographic Society medal. However, judges were so impressed with Keith & Kate Brown’s ‘Grease Gaskets & Gears’ entry in the 2014 Audio Visual competition, that the Royal Society awarded the couple a prestigious silver medal.

The compilation of competition images were first snapped last year when Keith & Kate, Stephen Elliott, Ray Fowler and others from Hope Valley’s Photographic Society, set up their cameras in a vintage car enthusiast’s garage. Stephen Elliott’s superb photo of a vintage Bugatti car was used in the opening sequence, when Keith & Kate used their skills to turn hundreds of photographs into the silver medal winning audio visual compilation.

You have an opportunity to see this award winning presentation, along with a range of Keith & Kate’s prize winning ‘audio visuals’ at St Edmund’s Church, Castleton at 7.30.pm on Friday August 22nd. Tickets can be purchased at the door: £4 – adults, £2 – 18 & under.

Notices for July & August

Hello CHVPS members
Ian has asked for the following information to be passed onto you  all.

Connie Brown Many members will have met Connie Brown, who’s Keith’s mother and a resident of Hope for quite a number of years. Connie, who had had a heart of gold and was full of fun,  died on Wednesday 9th July. A celebration of Connie’s life will be held at St Peter’s Church, Hope at 1430 on Thursday 31st of July. Connie was a football fan and I understand that Keith & Kate would like all those who attend the celebration of Connie’s life to wear football club coloured ties or bright colours.

C&HVPS and Hathersage’s Gala  I’d like to thank everyone who attended the gala, or helped Jason & Erica, or donated raffle prizes. Many gala attendees were interested in the images which were displayed in the gazebo, with some expressing interest in joining C&HVPS. Some visitors wanted to buy the images on display! I’d particularly like to thank Jason & Erica. They spent many hours planning our part in Hathersage’s Gala, coming up with the brilliant idea of ordering a large and colourful C&HVPS  banner. We’ll be able to use this banner many times in the future, starting with the exhibition of our 2014 competition images at St Edmund’s Church.

Our annual exhibition and AV at St Edmund’s Church
All of this year’s competition images will be displayed between 16th to 25th August (1400 to 1630) at St Edmund’s Church, Castleton.
Don’t forget that Keith & Kate are presenting their AV’s on August 22nd, also at St Edmund’s Church. The presentation starts at 1930 and finishes at 2130. Admission for paid up members of C&HVPS will be free. Why don’t you bring partners and friends to this event? Adults £4, children £2. Ray will be taking bookings and issuing tickets, which can also be bought at our next meeting on August 14th. All being well, Denis Thorpe will present the trophy to Nick Chalkley, who won the monochrome section of this year’s competition.

Kind regards

Ian
